Muffin tops are composed of extra layers of fat in and around your abdominal area. It wraps around the belly like a doughnut, hence the term spare tire. Just like every type of excess fat in the body, muffin tops must be burned off using cardio exercises. Cardio requires the body to use up fuel in order to move and perform. This fuel comes in the form of excess fat. Exercises such as power walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming and aerobics increases the heart rate and improves circulation. Pick a favorite exercise and stick by it or do as I did – use several types of exercises in order to challenge the different muscles of the body and get a fresh workout every time.

Recommended amount of exercise per week: A minimum of 40 minutes a day at least 3 times a week to build up resistance and strength, then increase workouts to one hour.

Dump the sugar.
Once ingested, sugar is converted into fat and stored. Eat too much and you will have high reserves of unwanted fat around the waistline in no time. A little goes a long way, so watch how much sugar you eat on a daily basis. By decreasing the amount of calories you take in, you will also decrease the extra inches.

Recommended amount of sugar to avoid: Keep total amount of sugar intake to 9 tsps. for men and 5 tsps. for women. At these amounts, calories are easier to burn with regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Work the curves.
Most people attempt to get rid of muffin tops by using targeted abdominal exercises. As you probably know by now, these exercises alone will not help achieve the results you want. First of all, excess fats are best burned off by cardio exercises, the kind that gets the whole body moving. Second, people often make the mistake of exercising the front area of the abdomen but not the sides and back. The trick is to build trim, strong muscles not just in front but also on the back and sides to ensure proper support and achieve a trimmer figure.

Recommended exercises: Twists work wonders by pulling and conditioning the muscles at the sides and back. Alternate these by stretching out arms and bending to the sides. Keep the spine straight and aligned and do 12 reps each. Want a gentler workout? Go swimming. Water keeps you buoyant but allows you to work out your abdominal muscles efficiently. Do basic kicks in the pool followed by scissor kicks.

Get a little help.
There are weight loss products that aid in boosting metabolism, increasing the body’s efficiency in burning off fat. Not all products formulated to trim off fat are safe, though, so it is a good idea to pick one that contains ingredients that do not disrupt the system but are effective in helping you whittle away at the extra curves at the waist.

The snow has finally melted but are you ready to embrace your favorite short shorts? If a new found muffin top is making you wary of ditching your cozy winter layers, rest assured there are plenty of ways to whittle away those extra pounds without hitting the gym seven days a week.

“Muffin tops are a problem spot for everyone who overeats,” says celebrity trainer Barry Jay, founder of Barry’s Bootcamp, the bicoastal workout that’s attracted everyone from Katie Holmes to Alanis Morissette to Kim Kardashian. “That part of our body catches excess easily and it seems like it’s the last to change.”

To reverse the damage you did this winter, try asking a doctor or nutritionist how many calories you should be eating for your age, height and ideal body weight. “Cardio helps but food is 85 percent of the results we see,” says Jay.

Get Rid of a Muffin Top Exercises

For those who want to reduce the midsection (known as the muffin top), there are different Muffin Top Exercises which are specifically targeted for this. As this is a problem for anyone who overeats, as the body part tends to catch extra weight, it become pronounced during periods when you do overeat, and are not exercising as much. So, trying these specific exercises to target the muffin top, will help reduce the area of the body.

Side Bends -
With your feet shoulder width apart, you will reach down towards one toe, and with the opposite arm you will reach up (placing it on your waist). Doing 100 reps, and alternating sides, is going to target the area of your waist where the inches seem to add up.

Standing Twists -
Another one of the simple Muffin Top Exercises you can do is a standing twist. You will place your hands behind your head, and keep your elbows straight out; you will then isolate the core, without moving the hips, and twist to one side then the other (alternating). You can do a couple sets of 25 reps, until you reach 100 reps of these exercises as well. Although it is a simple exercise, you are isolating the core, and by keeping the body and hips square, you are working the muffin top, and lower ab muscles only.

Jackknives -
These Muffin Top Exercises are a bit tougher to do. Laying on your back, you will place your feet straight up in the air, and your hands straight up as well (over your face). You will keep the shoulders off the floor, and lift from the waist; this is going to target the core muscle groups as well, and will isolate the muscle activity while you are working out. As these are more difficult, if you cannot keep your legs straight, you can bring them down to a 45 degree angle as you lift from the waist. Doing about 50 reps of these exercises will help workout the troubled area.

There are of course other simple exercises that you can do from basic ab work like crunches, to planks, which are one of the best all around body exercises you can do. However, these are not specifically targeted at the muffin top. If doing planks, you can do them on alternate sides (as opposed to doing them on both arms at once), which allows you to isolate the specific muscle groups, and this will be a great exercise to target the muffin top. But, these are for individuals who are a bit more advanced, and might take some getting used to.

So, regardless of how much you have exercised in the past, and how bad the muffin top has gotten, these Muffin Top Exercises are going to help you lose the excess weight around the midsection. If done everyday, and if the proper diet is followed, those who engage in these exercises on a regular basis are going to see the change, and the reduction they were hoping for.

Changes to Eliminate the Muffin Top

Although there are different exercises you can do, and specifically targeted routines you can do to attack the Muffin Top, with exercise alone you are not going to see the changes you are hoping for. So, whether you have gained a few pounds during the winter months, or have been off track on your diet for some time now, making a few small changes, and considering an overall change to diet and your workouts, will help you get rid of the Muffin Top, and see the slimmer body you are hoping for.

Exercise -

Of course exercise is essential to losing the Muffin Top. From crunches to planks, or doing specifically targeted exercises, you will see changes with these exercises. But, if you want to see a total body change, and a reduction in the midsection, you will find that a full body routine, and introducing cardio in to your workout routine, is critical to losing the extra pounds around the midsection. Cardio is key to fat burning, which is in turn going to help reduce the Muffin Top; so, including cardio in to the mix, and doing specifically targeted exercises (such as planks, or doing side twists), is something that will help you see the changes.

Focus on the Core -
When doing exercises for the Muffin Top, as opposed to focusing on the body part, you have to focus on the core. Doing things like planks, pulls ups, or using a medicine ball for ab work, are some things that are far more effective for overall body strength. By strengthening the core, you will notice far more in the way of change, than if you simply do hundreds of crunches each day.

Diet -
By adding exercise to your daily regime, you will see the results; but, if you are not eating the proper foods, or following a sensible diet, that exercise is only going to go so far. So, if you want to see the best results, and want to get rid of the Muffin Top in as short a period of time as possible, you will have to change the diet you have been following, which led to the undesirable body that you are trying to change. Some simple changes can help; some things to consider include:

  • cutting out sugars and refined foods;
  • eating whole grains;
  • high protein diets;
  • including fruits and veggies (as the carbs in your diet); and,
  • including the healthy fats (like avocado, olive oil, nuts), which are actually going to help in weight loss (as they are low in saturated fat).

Making small dietary changes, with the new workout regime, is the best way to see the reduction in the Muffin Top, and an overall change in your body composition, as well as the way you feel.

Considering these changes, and considering both the diet and exercise (as opposed to just one), are some of the easiest ways to see a body transformation, and to help you reduce the Muffin Top in a shorter period of time.
